I got my start painting backgrounds at Perennial Pictures Film Corp. in Indianapolis, In.
We did a lot of Hanna-Barbera TV influenced stuff, many Christmas specials, and using plain old house paint (just like the ink & paint on cells). Lots of sponge for textures, with cut-out stencils for the shapes.

These bg's are from their first feature length project, "The Ugly Duckling's Christmas Wish", where I was the art director as well as the only background painter. They are quite different from the more stylized stuff from early on, of which I can't seem to find any good pictures .
I may have to break out the old videotapes and make some screen grabs...
Looking back, it's still pretty amazing that such a small crew got this done in something like 9 months. |
